Vietlott "empowers" the dream of becoming a teacher for a poor ethnic minority student.

07/02/2024 21:16

Len Thi Yen, a 10th-grade student from Class 10C7 at Tran Hung Dao High School, Krông Bông District, Dak Lak Province, is the central figure in the visit by the "Granting Opportunities - Connecting Dreams" program this time.

Yen belongs to the Muong ethnic group, born into a family of four siblings in the challenging region of Cư Pui commune, Krông Bông District. Her father works as a laborer far away in Binh Phuoc, her eldest sister is married and lives with her husband, and her second sister dropped out of school in 10th grade to work and contribute to the family income. Yen, the third child in the family, attends school for one session, while during the other session, she helps her mother in the fields to earn extra income for her family and to cover medical expenses for her younger brother who is seriously ill.

Despite facing difficulties, Yen has always been diligent, attending school regularly, and excelling in her studies. Throughout her lower secondary education, Yen consistently earned the title of an excellent all-around student with a good conduct record. She also serves as the class monitor for Class 10C7, achieving outstanding academic results in the 2022-2023 school year. Yen is an exemplary student, demonstrating academic excellence, resilience in overcoming challenges, and diligence at the school.

Despite her academic excellence, Yen is always filled with worries for her parents, her younger brother, and her family. Her mother earns only 200,000 VND a day through farming, and the work is not always available. The family relies on each other, and meals often consist of boiled vegetables and eggs to get through the day. Yen's father works far away, and the house has deteriorated significantly without a man's presence to maintain it. The money her parents earn is dedicated to the medical treatment of her younger brother, who is battling blood cancer. The challenging and obscure life sometimes leads Yen to contemplation.

"At times, I also consider quitting school to work and help my parents more with my younger brother," Yen shared with a choked voice.

However, this thought is quickly dismissed because Yen understands that only education can bring a brighter future for herself and her family.

"Going to school provides more knowledge and a better understanding of many interesting things. It allows me to find a more stable job to prevent the hardships my parents are facing," Yen shared. Despite the difficulties, Yen dreams of becoming a preschool teacher, with a burning desire to teach young children and broaden their understanding of the world.

Thanks to her strong desire for learning and diligence, Len Thi Yen has received a meaningful scholarship from Vietlott representatives. It is hoped that with this "Granting Opportunities," she will "Connect Dreams," gaining additional motivation to turn her dream of becoming a teacher into reality and become a valuable citizen for society.
